ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said on Friday at a press conference after a meeting at the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) that classes for Grades 9 to 11 would begin from January 18 whereas Primary schools would reopen from February 1.
The NCOC meeting was attended by federal and provincial education ministers as well as health ministers. He had earlier said that although he thought education was important, the final decision would be on health grounds and that pupils’ wellbeing would be a priority. Shafqat’s government had announced a phase-wise plan to reopen educational institutes closed on November 26 to contain the corona virus.
The provincial government of the Punjab has for its part promised it will ensure strict compliance of COVID-19 SOPs in its schools.
In a buildup to the ‘reopening announcement’, Mehmood had said the PTI government would not compromise children’s health.
