RAWALPINDI: A death row inmate at the Adiala Jail committed suicide in the early hours of Thursday by hanging himself in his cell.
Muhammad Iqbal, who was convicted and sentenced to death, strangled himself using his shalwaar azarband in his cell at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi. The condemned prisoner was admitted in the prison on 27/05/2005 on judicial remand in case FIR NO. 291 dated 13/07/2005.
Rawalpindi Judicial Magistrate Zafar Hussan Naqvi conducted a detailed inquiry and ordered a post mortem. According to initial inquiry, no marks of violence were found on his body. Iqbal’s appeal was in the Supreme Court since 2010. DIG Prisons Shahid Saleem Baig also visited the jail and made a detailed inquiry.
Iqbal’s brothersMuhammad Idress and Muhammad Afzal also reached the jail and were reportedly satisfied with the judicial inquiry, making a written affidavit confirming that their brother had indeed committed suicide. They stated — according to the affidavit — that they had not found marks of violence on Iqbal’s body after examining it and they do not suspect anyone for his death.
