INDIA: The political party in power in most of India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party or BJP – suffered a setback in the Delhi Assembly election as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — or Common Man’s Party — kept it firmly in the driving seat.
Interestingly, the abbreviation “aap” is a word in the Urdu language which is a respectful synonym for the English word “you”!
Indeed, Home Minister Amit Shah was jolted, since he’d gone out of his way to ensure Kejriwal didn’t get a third term in office.
Mr Shah urged voters to press the button with the lotus flower (the ruling BJP’s symbol) on the electronic voting machine so that the “electric current was felt in Shaheen Bagh,” where crowds were peacefully protesting the recent CAA-NRC-NPR laws they considered discriminatory..
Although Amit Shah, U.P. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigned frantically, Mr. Kejriwal only spoke of his work and that was what he was taking to the people. Although he did criticise Amit Shah for Delhi’s deteriorating law and order he did not directly criticise Prime Minister Modi.
