KARACHI: The meteorological (Met) office confirmed on Wednesday that this metropolitan port city of Pakistan had felt 26 minor earthquakes over last four days. The first tremor was felt on Sunday evening, at a maximum intensity of 3.6 on the Richter scale to a minimum of 2 since the first tremor on Sunday, according to Pakistan’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre Pakistan.
Although light tremors were felt elsewhere too, earthquakes were felt in the Malir, Quaidabad, Landhi and Gadap localities of the city.
Chief Meteorologist Ameer Khan explained that the tremors are being caused by seismic activity along the Landhi Fault Region, one of the two active fault lines in the Karachi region. The other is in the vicinity of Thana Bola Khan.
Mr. Khan also said that the Kirthar mountain range, situated near a major tectonic boundary, occasionally experiences moderate seismic events too.
“The fault line may take a few days to stabilize, so people may continue to feel light tremors in the next few days, but they would most likely end on Wednesday,” he cautioned.
