FRANCE: A knife attack left three people dead near a Catholic church in Nice, the French police have said.
Nice’s mayor Christian Estrosi called the killings an act of terrorism by a recent Arab immigrant who yelled Allah O Akbar (God is the greatest, in Arabic) when the police shot and arrested him.
The terrorist almost severed the head of one of the victims.
Mayor Estrosi called for all places of worship to be closed, while France’s national anti-terror prosecutors opened a murder inquiry.
‘We will never give in’, says Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron called the attack an “Islamist terrorist attack” and said after visiting the Notre-Dame basilica here that France would “not surrender its core values”. He emphasized, “We will never give in.”
Troops have been called out across the country to protect churches and schools.
