KARACHI: Eleven people died and several were injured when three adjacent residential buildings collapsed one after the other on Thursday, in the Golimar locality here.

Eighteen wounded were taken to hospital.

The Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said the bodies of seven women, three children and one man had been brought in to this hospital alone, so far. Rescue sources said two children had also been rescued from the rubble.

A fourth building near the three that collapsed has also been declared unsafe. Soldiers and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) reached Golimar Number 2 to aid the rescue.

The lower portion of the fallen building that created the domino effect was already derelict.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the deputy commissioner to assess the situation and he sought a report on the building’s construction and today’s rescue operation.

A Sindh Building Control Authority (SCBA) source said the building that initiated the domino effect collapse was illegally built and the officials who allowed it to be built had been suspended from their jobs, pending a criminal case that was about to be registered against them.
