DOHA: United States Special Envoy on Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Doha, the capital of the Arab state of Qatar, on Monday for fresh talks with the Taliban to end the 17-year Afghan conflict.
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar — an influential Taliban deputy leader and a co-founder of the movement — also arrived in Doha late on Sunday but his role in the talks remains unclear.
Afghan special envoy for peace Mohammad Omar Daudzai also praised Baradar´s participation, saying the Taliban deputy leader was known for being “independent” and making “tough decisions”.
But the Kabul government says its being sidelined in the negotiations as the Taliban dismiss it as “puppets”.
