A PASSENGER suspected of attempting to hijack a flight from Bangladesh to Dubai on Sunday was shot dead by Bangladeshi special forces.

All 148 passengers and crew on board the Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG147 Boeing 737-800 aircraft are safe but it is unclear still why the man who said he had a handgun on him, may have attempted to hijack the plane.

Rescuing soldiers said the 25-year old was initially wounded but died shortly afterwards and the general in charge of the rescue said the man was a Bangladeshi and nothing but the pistol was found on him.

Earlier reports suggested the suspect may have been mentally ill, demanding to speak to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who was visiting the coastal city of Chittagong.
