PESHAWAR: Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar on Thursday described the task of reforming the judiciary as gigantic, saying he couldn’t fix the system alone.
The chief justice was addressing an event at the bar association after hearing several public interest issues at the Supreme Court Peshawar registry.
Addressing judges and lawyers, the CJ remarked that dispensation of justice should be measured, adding that those who submit a genuine apology should be forgiven. He said it was judges’ duty to dispense justice and the judiciary should respond to complaints that justice is being delayed across the country.
He appealed for equal contribution from bar members towards his struggle to reform the judiciary and dispense swift justice.
Crusading Chief Justice Nisar explained that fundamental changes were necessary to fix the system, admitting, “I cannot make a law, I can only implement it.” He said that if judicial reforms were not on the state’s agenda he was not responsible.
The CJ takes suo motu notice of most problems that catch his eye these days, be it the condition of hospitals, the police, land development authorities or politics and politicians. He has come under public fire for meddling in affairs “that are no concern of his” instead of setting his overwhelmingly overburdened judiciary right.
